Note
Native to the rocky hills and poor soils of northwestern Mexico this Sonoran native should be much more widely used. The large fan-shaped leaves are powdery grey-blue and look cooling near a pool. Although plants are drought tolerant once established, watering every 7-10 days in summer will keep them looking their best.

Note
Native to North Africa and extreme southern Europe this common, multi-trunked fan-leaved palm is an elegant focal plant. If you want only one or a few of the trunks, begin removing unwanted stems when the plant is young; pruning mature plants can be a trial. Mediterranean fan palms have deep green stiff leaves that are held on a slender 10-foot tall stem. This species grows well in full sun or partial shade and in any soil, but looks best with regular irrigation in the summer.

Note
This relative of the familiar date palms native to the Mekong Delta of Vietnam and adjacent Laos. It is a splendid choice for a desert garden growing equally well in a large container or a garden bed, it makes a graceful accent to a small patio or garden. The solitary trunk of pygmy date palm is 6 feet tall at maturity and tolerates both full sun or partial shade but needs a rich, organic soil. The pinnate leaves are extremely delicate with a strong arch and widely spaced leaflets and so light they move in the slightest breeze.
