Note
Native to the rocky hills and poor soils of northwestern Mexico this Sonoran native should be much more widely used. The large fan-shaped leaves are powdery grey-blue and look cooling near a pool. Although plants are drought tolerant once established, watering every 7-10 days in summer will keep them looking their best. |

Note
Native to North Africa and extreme southern Europe this common, multi-trunked fan-leaved palm is an elegant focal plant. If you want only one or a few of the trunks, begin removing unwanted stems when the plant is young; pruning mature plants can be a trial. Mediterranean fan palms have deep green stiff leaves that are held on a slender 10-foot tall stem. This species grows well in full sun or partial shade and in any soil, but looks best with regular irrigation in the summer. |

Note
This relative of the familiar date palms native to the Mekong Delta of Vietnam and adjacent Laos. It is a splendid choice for a desert garden growing equally well in a large container or a garden bed, it makes a graceful accent to a small patio or garden. The solitary trunk of pygmy date palm is 6 feet tall at maturity and tolerates both full sun or partial shade but needs a rich, organic soil. The pinnate leaves are extremely delicate with a strong arch and widely spaced leaflets and so light they move in the slightest breeze. |
